ASIFA INDIA — BUILDING INDIA’S ANIMATION COMMUNITY, ONE EVENT AT A TIME

The Room Where Indian Animation Comes Alive

Since 2000, ASIFA India has been doing something quietly extraordinary — gathering thousands of people who make Indian animation what it is, and giving them a space to learn, share, and grow together.

There is a particular kind of energy in a room full of animators.

It is part classroom, part studio, part creative sanctuary. Ideas move fast. Questions go deep. Someone pulls up a reference on their laptop, someone else sketches something on a notepad, and before long, what started as a seminar has become a genuine conversation between artists who speak the same creative language.

That is the energy that ASIFA India has been cultivating since the year 2000. And over two and a half decades, it has quietly become one of the most important forces in the story of Indian animation.

What ASIFA India Actually Does — And Why It Matters

ASIFA — the International Animated Film Association — is the world’s oldest and largest animation organisation, with over 40 chapters across the globe. The India chapter has, since its founding, taken on a mission that goes beyond screenings and celebrations. It has committed itself to something harder and more valuable: building a real creative community in a country where animation was, for a long time, an industry of isolated pockets rather than a connected ecosystem.

The tool it chose to do this? Events. Consistent, thoughtful, professionally crafted events — workshops, seminars, behind-the-scenes exposés, and case studies that bring the real workings of the animation world into the open.

This was not a small ambition. And the results, accumulated year after year since 2000, have been nothing short of transformative.

Workshops — Where Knowledge Becomes Skill

ASIFA India’s workshops have always been designed with a single purpose: to make participants better at what they do.

Not better in a vague, inspirational sense — but practically, technically, demonstrably better. Whether focused on character animation principles, storyboarding for television, rigging workflows, or the nuances of sound design in animated productions, each workshop has brought working professionals and students into the same room and given them something immediately useful to take back to their desks.

What makes these workshops distinct is who delivers them. ASIFA India has consistently attracted practitioners — working animators, directors, producers, and technical artists who bring the credibility of real-world experience rather than the distance of theory. When a professional with decades of production experience walks you through their process, the learning is different. It sticks.

Over the years, hundreds of students and professionals across India have sat in these sessions and walked out with skills, frameworks, and habits that shaped their careers. Many of them did not know it at the time. But the work showed it later.
